I adopted a few wardrobe rules about four years ago that have really changed my life. I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, so I had just purged most of our house and most of my closet. Mark will never forgive me. I may have taken the liberty of deciding which of his things brought him joy. I was just trying to help. IDK why he got so mad, but I digress.
It was time to rebuild and I wanted to make sure I bought classic, quality pieces. I started on Pinterest and pinned just about every French, minimalist, and capsule wardrobe thing I could find and studied them. I went as far as to try and plan my whole wardrobe out on paper, but it was a little overwhelming and I didn't want to take all of the fun out of clothes.
I decided on a pretty simple rule which has helped me keep everything under control: I mainly buy solid color items that are white, black, grey, blue (usually navy), or nude. There are a some exceptions to this in my closet. For example, I have a red Tippi sweater from J.Crew (a classic sweater they make every year), a hot pink silk blouse, a plaid Madewell button down, a few striped things, and a leopard sweater and dress. Other than that, I'm all mostly all solid colors.
I've put together a few of my everyday go-tos and one or two items I need or need to replace to complete my wardrobe essentials.
TOPS & DRESSES
- Blue and white tee - Someone in Loft was ordering three of these and she said it was the perfect tee. I just ordered the blue and white. It is so soft and the lengths looks perfect.
- Striped tee
- Grey sweater
- Oxford shirt
- Striped tank dress - love this dress! I'm wearing it here with the denim jacket below.
- Fancy white blouse like this one or this one
- Denim jacket
(I love Citizen's rocket jeans because they are high-waisted and I'm not pulling them up all of the time.)
